Pre/Post workout... a little help!

I want to share a little information on what to eat pre and post workout. I have done quite a bit of research on this because the last thing I wanted to do was work my butt off at the gym and then ruin it by eating the wrong food before or after working out. This is what I have gathered (obviously, I am not an expert but this is what makes the most sense). Before working out you need  lean protein and a low glycemic carb. The protein is obviously for your muscles, and the low glycemic carb is for sustained energy. Examples would be oats, brown, rice, yams, etc. Personally, I go to the gym at 6am, so I will do 1/3 or 1/2 cup of rolled oats for my carb, and 4-5 egg whites for my protein. As far as after workout, you need PROTEIN most importantly, and a high glycemic carb- fruit works great. I usually do a protein shake and a banana. It is best to have these as soon as possible after your workout, and eat them together. The glycemic carb works quickly and helps start the repair process, and restore the glycogen. (You don't have to worry about the sugars in the fruit, post workout is the best time to have sugar.) The last thing to remember is not to eat fats after your workout. Fats slow digestion, which is why they are great to have throughout the day (healthy fats, in moderation) but if you eat them after your workout, it is going to slow the repair process. Hopefully this helps!

Tonight I made a delicious, spicy taco salad with black beans. You can find my recipe under featured recipes. I also made another batch of protein bars- except I used banana baby food, and chocolate protein. I also added a ripe banana and sprinkled some oats on top. They're still too warm to cut, but they look and smell awesome!

One last side note: I am an official believer in the Apple Cider Vinegar. Tonight I forgot to take it before dinner for the first time since I bought it... and my stomach is super bloated :( At least I know it works!

  2. I usually mix it with equal parts water and take it like a shot... 1 or 2 tbsp :)

  3. I was just reading about the apple cider vinegar and then came across it on your website. Do you take it before each meal? or just in the morning?

    1. I just do it in the morning now. One shot followed by water to wash it down!

  5. I have a question, so after your workout you have that banana and protein shake, but how long after that would you have your next meal? Does the shake and banana count as a meal?
